The Beer Drinker's Companion - Frank Baillie
Britain is still fortunate in having over 1,000 home-produced brands of beer. Many of these beers are of great character but little known and hard to find. The Beer Drinker's Companion is a guide to all the country's beers, including information on where to find them and the pubs of the ninety or so brewers (many very small) throughout the country-information never before collected in a practical and concise form.
The author gives full accounts of the different kinds of beer-draught, keg and bottled-explaining exactly what they are, and some controversial subjects and myths are discussed and presented in a factual and unbiassed form. Other contents include an explanation of the terms used to describe gravity and alcoholic strength; the brewing and malting processes; the part played by hops and the other brewing ingredients; the hop plant, the brewer's dray; changes and trends in the brewing industry; and a dis cussion of 'home-brew' pubs and where they can still be found.
